Where Can I Find Emergency Shelters for Pregnant Women?

Please understand that we cannot list the shelters’ addresses in every state in this post because that would make it too long and uncomfortable to read. Instead, use these suggestions:

The first place to visit if you’re looking for a shelter in your state or county’s Department of Social Services or Department of Health and Human Services. Meet up with a social worker and explain your condition. They will provide you with some information on the available shelters in your area that are acquainted with them.

Alternatively, you can go to various organizations and websites that provide such information online. Some of the examples of websites that have a good database on the available shelters for women are the WomensShelters.org, the Pregnancyandchildren.com, etc. You can use the online resources to search for a shelter by state.  You can also go and contact the United Way hotline at 2-1-1. They can help you locate the nearest safe emergency shelters designed for pregnant women in your area.

What’s Next?

The next step would be starting to think about how to get long-term housing. Most of these shelters are available only as a temporary housing. This means that at some point you and your baby have to go.

There is always some form of housing assistance programs available in every state. For example, there’s the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Section 8 program, etc. Usually, there is also a separate program provided by the state governments, which also gives out housing assistance for those who are in need.

However, just as one might have suggested, the amount of low-income people want to have this housing assistance exceeds the number of available spots. Therefore, many have to be on a waiting list. This waiting period can be pretty hard, especially when you have low income.

Therefore, it is a wise move to start considering a financial assistance to help you during a hard time. The name of the program is the Temporary Cash Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), which can help pregnant women to get the things she needs for the well-being of her and her unborn baby.

Some of the good examples of women shelters run by nun profit organizations, working together with the government are the Women in Need in NYC, Prevention Assistance and Temporary Housing Office (PATH) in NYC, Providence House in Brooklyn, The Good Counsel Home in New Jersey, the First Step Home in Ohio, Lexi House in Alabama, etc.

Don’t forget to use the resources we’ve mentioned earlier to help you find pregnant women shelters in your area!
